Mill Street Farmhouse - Restoring Historic Detail in Village Home
The Crystal Lake Farmhouse is a 1600 square-foot turn-of-the-century home soon to be historically renovated -- located in the heart of Rhinebeck Village.
A necessary component of the overall Crystal Lake Lodge development site, the farmhouse building is a 1,600 square-foot turn-of-the-century home. Like the care facility, it had also fallen into disrepair. But it was more structurally sound than the care facility and had more inherent charm to be unlocked. Its many small rooms were opened up to create an open floor plan. Under layers of old flooring and sub-flooring, the original floors were discovered to be in fairly good condition. Rather than fight the quirks and limitations of the house-its hodge-podge floor plan and mix-matched floorboards-the plan was to incorporate those features as part of the charm of age. To give a sense of aesthetic order for the whole building, a single palate of simple colors for the entire house was introduced and unified trim details were added throughout.
The exterior of the house has been completely restored. Original siding was repaired or replaced, new historically-appropriate windows were installed and the house was painted in a neutral, inviting palate.
